Tietze Research Awards to two NDRG faculty members
Both grants offered in 2026 by the John H. Tietze Foundation Trust have been awarded to NDRG faculty members.
Katie Liu received the Jaconette L. Tietze Young Scientist Award. The award will support her lab’s efforts to use patient-derived adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells to improve repair of their injured nerves.
Mark Bothwell received the John H. Tietze Stem Cell Scientist Award. The award will allow gene-edited induced pluripotent stem cells to be produced to permit drug-controlled expression of the transcription factors EGFR2 and EGR3, which are master regulators of differentiation of myelinating Schwann cells from stem cells.
Both projects illustrate NDRG’s commitment to discover approaches to block degeneration and improve regeneration of peripheral nerves.

Sofia Jepson awarded ISCRM Fellowship
Sofia Jepson has been awarded an ISCRM Fellowship for 2025-2026. This fellowship will support Sofia’s ground-breaking work creating in vitro models of muscle spindles, the mysterious sensory end-organs that allow us to sense and correctly control the state of contraction of individual muscles.

Advanced degrees awarded to members of the NDRG team
On Monday, August 14, Cecelia Watson successfully defended her Masters dissertation “Investigation of Neuregulin-1 Treatment in 3D engineered skeletal muscle toward Intrafusal Spindle Fiber Generation in vitro”.
On Tuesday, August 15, Saffie Mohran successfully defended his PhD dissertation “The modulation of myofibril function: How small molecules and sarcomeric mutations impact actomyosin interactions”.

David Mack Receives Grant Award
David Mack is the inaugural recipient of a new multi-year award established by Larry and Eileen Tietze for mid-career level scientists. The grant will support efforts to engineer stem cell-derived neuromuscular junctions for the purpose of studying the onset of neuromuscular diseases and testing potential therapeutics.
